The Mike-A-Thon

The Mike-A-Thon is an annual, one-day shooting event held solely to raise money to repair the eyes of children whose parents cannot afford the price of needed surgery. Working on behalf of and exclusively with the Wright Foundation that provides the needed treatments and surgical procedures, the Mike-A-Thon has become recognized as a very enjoyable and fun-filled event for shooters of all skill levels. Their day of shooting enjoyment results in a positive, life changing experience for the kids who ultimately receive treatment.

“Friendly” and “personal” is the tone that marks the event as experienced shooters share their knowledge with new shooters and friendly range officers offer advice and encouragement while maintaining strict safety procedures. A delicious lunch is included in the price of the shoot, and an auction for valuable sporting items and dinners at fine restaurants is held afterwards. A few people always walk away with some very nice shotguns they were lucky enough to win in the ever-popular raffle.

What is Sporting Clays?

Sporting Clays is the fastest growing shooting sport in the nation. Often described as “golf with a shotgun,” each participant goes to a station where two clay targets are thrown into the air. The participant loads two shells into a shotgun and tries to break each target before it lands.

At most stations, the pair of targets is repeated three or four times. Usually there are ten different stations, each with a different pair of targets: going away, overhead, crossing, falling, etc. This provides great variety and challenges each shooter’s skills in different ways. One learns to laugh at one’s self when shooting sporting clays.
